I recently hosted A Naked Lady Soiree at Urban Promise Academy and it was such a pleasure! Not only was it a fun experience but it was also very moving in terms of body image for young ladies.
I brought over loads of clothes for the girls to play with from Halmoni and we had sparkling cider with other yummy treats to set the tone for A Naked Lady Soiree. A Naked Lady Soiree is all about building body positive relationships with ourselves and others and swapping clothes. At first all the girls were shy and quiet but as the clothing swap continued they eventually let their guard down once their playing dress up mode turned on. Before we started the swap we sat around a table to check in with our feelings, introduce ourselves and name one thing that they love about their body. There were a handful of girls that couldn't come up with one thing that they loved about themselves...some actually said "I hate everything about my body". There was one top that a few of the girls loved and instead of making them decide which girl was going to keep it, I suggested that it could be like "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" movie. They loved that idea. At the end we sat around and talked about the clothing swap experience vs. shopping in a mall or big name shop. The girls said that they liked the swap because there were lots of clothes that actually fit their body and at malls they can't always find things that fit. We also went around to see what they loved about their body after being mindful of being body positive and affirming. Everyone now could name something that they loved about their body. That made my whole day! I felt so good to make a difference. I suggested to them that they could keep the swap going throughout the summer and as long as they wanted by having at slumber parties or birthday parties...they loved that too!! Y Last night I went to a really great event, Let's Talk Oakland held at Awaken Cafe in downtown Oakland. The featured panelist were Ari Serrano-Embree from Oakland Surf Club, Angela Tsay from Oaklandish, Kate Ellen Murphy from Crown 9 Jewelry, Cortt Dunlap from Awaked Cafe and CEO Jack Dorsey, Square founder. A lot of small business use square, including myself and I am glad that they exist because I don't know what I would do without them! Let's Talk Oakland brought up such great topics, such as, growing your business in Oakland. It was super rad rubbing elbows with other small business owners too. What a great time connecting and chatting with other entrepreneurs!!! I look forward to more events like this because they break the walls down that we build up to isolate ourselves. It was great sharing stories and experiences with others who are doing similar things to uplift our amazing city! We event got lots of goodies that I like to call our swag bag of the evening. We got stickers galore, business cards from those I want to connect with and Baggu gave away some free reusable bags!!! Of course, Colonel Peanut was there to network his heart out :)
We are gonna make a quick trip to 1993!! "Dreamlover" by Mariah Carey is one of my all time favorites. (The video is shot in upstate NY) I think it's a really good karaoke song :) My sister and I would sing our hearts to "Dreamlover". I love the video and all the guy dancers doing the bogel!!! Growing up in the Bronx, we would buy bootleg tapes on Fordham Rd with money that my mom gave us. They were only $5!!! They didn't have the album jacket...it was only a pixelated photocopy of the cover :/ Most of the time we recorded songs on cassettes from the radio...did you do that when you were a kid? I hope you enjoy this song, here is the link, just in case :) |
