My boo and I are going on a short camping trip next weekend and it got me thinking about what my dream camping trip would look like. I don't mind roughing it but if I had all the money in the world and time, what would I want? I started browsing the web to virtually window shop and here are a few things that caught my eye. I've been playing with Photoshop because I am trying to learn how to be self sufficient with computer skills. I put this collage together with a bit of help but on my own. How'd I do? It looks easier then it seems, at least to a beginner like me.

My weekend is coming up and all I can think about is painting my nails. Little things like manicures can make me feel human again and that is just what I am going to do this weekend. I don't buy nail polish that often because I store them in my fridge and that makes them last so much longer. I also found a brand back home that I am a slave to called Mattese Elite sold at Ricky's in NYC. The polish comes out matte which I appreciate because I don't always want my nails to be shiny shiny. I was looking for inspiration today and stumbled upon Nail Nerd. She is very dedicated to her nails and blogs on the regular with all of her genius creations. Here are a few of her designs that I loved at first sight. It's back-to-school time and I thought the calculus nails were very fitting in my search for inspiration. The orange sparkles outlined in black nails are perfect for Halloween nails if you don't want to go over the top. I love these nails with the gold trim because the turquoise/teal color is the paint color in the store. I like to call it "synergy". Last but not least, colorful stripes with freakin' leopard print. Really, nailnerd?? I love these. You rock my world! I'm not sure what I will end up with this weekend, but stay tuned to find out. I heart nail art!!! Do you???
I discovered the movie SPLASH with Daryl Hannah when I was a kid. I watched the movie religiously on a VHS tape which I had recorded on from the TV. I was obsessed because it was my only reference to mermaids, which I loved. I wanted to be a mermaid so bad. I drew them in my notebooks and I had dreams of swimming in the ocean with a fin instead of legs. I remember I would take baths for no reason just so I could pretend. I would gather my favorite toys (that sank to the bottom of the tub) and throw them in the water so that I could "dive" in and discover my "make-believe" underwater treasures. Maybe I was meant to be a haenyo--a Korean mermaid. Korean mermaids are not the mystical creatures that we see in movies; they are women-only sea divers from the Jeju Islands in Korea. The haenyo dive without oxygen tanks and solely rely on their vintage diving masks and special breathing techniques that help them store oxygen. These women free dive for abalone, sea urchins, octopi, seaweed and shellfish and have been diving for a living for at least 2000 years. Ancient Confucian Law required men to pay a hefty work labor tax for diving so women started diving because they could by pass the taxation. If that is not cool enough, haenyo range in age from 45-75 years old, so they are grandmothers (halmonis). They dive for up to 5 hours a day scouring the oceans floor filling up their nets, then diving for more. Haenyos work hard to support their families with the hopes of giving them a better life. Unfortunately they are a dying breed. In the 60's there were as many as 30,000 haenyo but today there are maybe 2,500 left, still diving for their living. To become a haenyo, your mother had to be one as it was a passed down profession. Many of their daughters, however, have moved to bigger cities in search of city life and jobs that don't involve diving. There is a Korean movie called, "My Mother the Mermaid, that is totally worth checking out. I happily watched this while eating Korean food as it captured my attention and tugged at my heart strings. I also found this clip of Haenyo diving. Check it out. I'm in need of a new vintage dress ...so I browsed Etsy today for some good old fashion window shopping. I love cap sleeves so I went looking for dresses that had just that. I am waiting to treat myself but it is nice to get inspiration. I heart vintage dresses.
OMG! Look at these beautiful dresses! I stumbled upon theses images while doing some research.
Liz Tran is the artist behind these cute, colorful dresses. She paints them as a tribute to the women who made these dresses. She sees the dresses as works of art. I would love to own all these dresses. Her painting style on her website is so different then these dresses and I appreciate that. Check out Liz Tran's website. Three Graces Gallery is where these dresses live. |
